Port Canaveral Is Now the Busiest Cruise Port in the World

For the first time since 2022, Port Canaveral has reclaimed the top spot as the world’s busiest cruise port, surpassing PortMiami after a record-breaking fiscal year 2025.

Key Takeaways

  • Port Canaveral handled 8,602,047 passenger movements in FY 2025, the highest in its history
  • That is a 13% increase over FY 2024 and edges out PortMiami by roughly 38,000 passengers
  • The port is homeport for 18 ships across 7 cruise lines with over 1,000 sailings annually
  • A $912 million capital improvement plan is underway to expand terminals and parking
  • Port Canaveral was also named Best North American Homeport by Cruise Critic in December 2025

Port Canaveral has quietly been one of the most important cruise hubs in the country for decades, but December 2025 made it official. With 8.6 million passengers moving through the port in fiscal year 2025, Port Canaveral surpassed PortMiami to claim the title of the world’s busiest cruise port. It is the second time Canaveral has held the top spot, having briefly claimed it in 2022 before Miami reclaimed the ranking in 2023 and 2024. For Space Coast residents, this is not just a headline. It is a reflection of how significantly this region has grown as a travel destination and transportation hub.

The Numbers

Port FY 2025 Passengers Year-over-Year Growth
Port Canaveral 8,602,047 +13%
PortMiami 8,564,225 +4%
Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) 4,700,000 +16%

What Is Driving the Growth

Several factors contributed to Port Canaveral’s record-breaking year. Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, one of the largest cruise ships ever built at 7,600 passenger capacity, began sailing year-round from Port Canaveral in summer 2025. The port currently serves as homeport for 18 ships across seven cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity, and others, with over 1,000 sailings annually.

Port Canaveral also benefits from its position as a drive-to market. Approximately 75% of its passengers drive to the port rather than flying, which distinguishes it from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Easy highway access, centralized location in Central Florida, and ample adjacent parking make it the preferred choice for passengers across a wide geographic area.

The $912 Million Expansion

Port Canaveral is not resting on the milestone. The Port Canaveral Advantage initiative, a $912 million five-year capital improvement program, is currently underway. The plan includes expansion of two existing cruise terminals, construction of a seventh new terminal campus, additional parking facilities, and new technology to streamline the boarding process. The investment is designed to accommodate larger ships and a growing passenger base well into the next decade.

“Earning this distinction is a direct reflection of our ongoing commitment and focused efforts to be the best port possible,” said Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO, at the time of the announcement. “This milestone underscores our commitment to supporting our cruise partners’ business growth.”

What It Means for Space Coast Travelers

More ships, more sailings, and a rapidly expanding port means more demand for reliable ground transportation between the Space Coast and Port Canaveral. Whether you are flying into Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) before boarding, getting to the port efficiently has never been more important.

With cruise embarkation days generating significant traffic on the Beachline (FL-528) and local roads leading to the port, timing and planning your arrival has a real impact on your embarkation day experience.
