How to Get from Melbourne Airport to Port Canaveral for Your Cruise
The closest airport to the port — and what most travelers still get wrong on embarkation day.
You flew into MLB on purpose. You did the math and realized what most passengers overlook: Melbourne Orlando International is the closest commercial airport to Port Canaveral — full stop. But closest doesn't automatically mean easiest. Here's everything you need to know.
Why MLB beats MCO for cruise travelers
At 27.5 miles, MLB beats Orlando International (MCO) by 17 miles and Sanford (SFB) by more than 30. That's not a small difference when you're hauling luggage and trying to make a noon embarkation. And unlike MCO, there's no 45-minute terminal crawl, no tram between concourses, and no thousand-person security line at 6am.
Delta and American Airlines both offer nonstop service from Atlanta, Charlotte, and other major hubs. For travelers coming from the Southeast, it's often a faster total journey — door to ship — than flying into Orlando.

The route: MLB to Port Canaveral
The drive is straightforward. Under normal conditions it takes 40 to 55 minutes — traffic on US-1 through Cocoa is the main variable, particularly on Saturday mornings when multiple ships depart simultaneously.
The one thing most guides don't tell you: A-Side vs. B-Side
Port Canaveral is divided into two sides by a channel. Getting to the wrong terminal on cruise morning isn't just inconvenient — it can cost you 15 minutes or more via SR-401, and there is no shortcut. Confirm your terminal before you leave the airport.
A-Side terminals
- Carnival Cruise Line
- Disney Cruise Line
- MSC Cruises
- CT-5, CT-6, CT-8, CT-10
B-Side terminals
- Royal Caribbean
- Terminal 3
- CT-1, CT-3
Your transportation options
Rental car parking based on $20/day × 7 nights at Port Canaveral · Rideshare cost reflects typical Saturday embarkation morning surge pricing
Private shuttle
A dedicated private shuttle is the most reliable option for cruise travel for one reason that matters above all others: your driver monitors your flight in real time. If your connection is delayed out of Atlanta or Charlotte, your driver adjusts. You don't land, stand at arrivals refreshing a rideshare app, and pray someone shows up.
Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)
MLB is a regional airport. Driver density is lower than at MCO, and early morning availability on peak embarkation Saturdays can be inconsistent. It's not uncommon to wait 20 to 30 minutes or have a confirmed ride cancelled. Surge pricing can push fares to $90 or more — comparable to a pre-booked private shuttle, but without the flight tracking.
Rental car
All major agencies have on-site facilities at MLB. The route is simple and the drive is scenic along A1A. The tradeoff is parking: Port Canaveral charges $20 per day with no reservation needed. For a 7-night cruise that's $140 added before you've left the dock. A rental makes the most sense if you're arriving a day early and want the flexibility to explore Cocoa Beach.
Public bus
Space Coast Area Transit does connect MLB to the Port Canaveral area, but with two transfers and a total journey of around 3 hours and 40 minutes. This is not a realistic option for cruise passengers traveling with luggage and a check-in window — it's included here for completeness.
Should you arrive the day before?
Yes, if your schedule allows it. A mechanical delay, weather cancellation, or missed connection the morning of your cruise cannot be fixed — ships leave on schedule. Flying into MLB the afternoon or evening before gives you a full buffer.
Stay along A1A in Cocoa Beach (10 to 15 minutes from the terminals), have dinner at The Cove waterfront area adjacent to the port, and watch ships move in the inlet the evening before yours even loads. The next morning is a 15-minute drive instead of a sprint.
